Any student who is having difficulty in grades 7 and 8 often continues to have difficulty in high school. In order to help these students, high schools provide strategies through learning skills courses that will help them gain the necessary skills in order to be successful in high school.
GLE is for students who have been identified exceptional through the IPRC process. Student can get 4 credits throughout their high school career. In grade 9 GLE is often taken in place of French as these students are exempt from this subject. GLS is for student who have not been identified and can get 2 credits throughout their high school career.
Typically there is very little homework during the course of the semester. Lessons are usually 1/2 the period long (although some can be longer) and activities follow where students can demonstrate their understanding and/or apply a skill learned.
To help improve their language skills, student normally write a journal entry on Monday mornings and we normally read one or two novels in class. There will be some chapter followup work to be completed to check for understanding, and one or two assignments based on the novel.
Students are to keep an up-to-date agenda so that I can monitor their homework and tests in their other three courses. I check and sign their agenda everyday, so I hope you as parents do too. Feel free to communicate with me via your son/daughter's agenda or by email/telephone.
Towards the end of most lessons there is time to work on their other courses, have individual or group study time, get extra help, or prepare for their next class.
